Jeep Model Responsible for Actor Anton Yelchin's Death Had Been Recalled

The model of Jeep that was responsible for the death of 27-year-old “Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin had been flagged for a safety issue by auto manufacturer Fiat Chrysler and was set to be recalled. Yelchin was killed on Saturday, June 18th, 2016 when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards, pinning him to a brick post outside of his Los Angeles home. Yelchin’s death is the first known fatality associated with the vehicle’s safety defect.

According to an article posted on CNN Money, Fiat Chrysler had received numerous reports of the vehicles rolling on their own due to a flaw in the electronic gear shift, which could lead to confusion about whether or not the cars were in park. The company filed a recall notice with federal safety regulators in April and issued a notice to affected owners warning about the issue in May, though a formal recall notice is yet to be released. The recall is estimated to affect roughly 1.1 million 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans, as well as model-year 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while Yelchin’s death is the first recorded fatality, at least 41 injuries and 500 combined collisions have been tied to the issue.

Fiat Chrysler will offer no-cost repairs for all owners of affected vehicles in order to fix the issue, though a timeframe for this impending recall is still uncertain. The company’s safety filing stated that it needs to wait for replacement parts to become available before repairs can commence.
